Intravenous iron sucrose is commonly used to treat iron deficiency (ANEMIA). Iron sucrose replaces iron in the blood to promote red blood cell production. It can also be helpful in patients with chronic kidney disease. Iron sucrose gets quickly absorbed into your body and works quickly to restore iron levels. It takes about a day for levels to rise as opposed to iron supplements which can take months before you can see a difference.
- Over time, if Anemia is left untreated, it can cause heart problems. If you already have heart problems, it can make those problems worse.
What are RED blood cells and why are they so important?
Red blood cells(erythrocytes) deliver oxygen to the tissues in your body. Oxygen turns into energy and your tissues release carbon dioxide(waste). Your red blood cells also transport carbon dioxide to your lungs for you to exhale.
What happens when your iron is low?
Signs that you may have low iron(anemia) include:
- Tiredness
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Irregular heartbeat
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Chest pain
- Cold hands and feet
- Headaches
Low iron levels prevent our bodies from synthesizing collagen. Without collagen, you will notice hair loss and perhaps even ridges on your nails.
What can I expect after an Iron Sucrose Infusion?
Most people return to their normal routine after a day of infusion. However, there can be a few sensations or side effects that can cause minor discomfort
What is the most common side effect after an iron sucrose infusion?
Iron infusion side effects are usually minimal, but may include: Bloating or swelling of your face, arms, hands, lower legs or feet. Dizziness, faintness or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position. Gastrointestinal pains, including nausea, cramps or diarrhea.
How long does it take for iron sucrose to increase hemoglobin?
Iron sucrose is effective in significantly raising the hemoglobin in anemic patients. The effects begin to manifest within approximately one week. Hemoglobin levels should witness an upturn within 2 to 3 weeks. This is significantly quicker than oral supplements, which often require between 3-6 months to effectively address anemia.
